History of Bandra

The Portuguese had given the Jesuits sole possession of Bandra, Parel, Wadala and Sion. In the year 1570, the priests set up a college and built a church in Bandra. John Fryer, the famous traveler mentions in his accounts that during the mid-18th century, a Jesuit church stood near the seashore around Bandra

The famous chapel of Mount Mary is said to have been built around 1640. According to a local story, it was destroyed during the war between the Portuguese and the Marathas. Apparently, the statue of the Virgin Mary somehow fell into the waters of the sea and was recovered by local fishermen. The statue was then temporarily kept at the St. Andrews Church. In 1761, the church of Mount Mary was rebuilt.

For a while, Bandra remained a typical, idyllic seaside village with stretches of rice and vegetable plantations. Most of the habilitation was concentrated in the low-lying areas of the island.

The year 1845 was turning point in the history of Bandra. The Mahim Causeway was completed and it now connected Bandra to Mahim and Bombay. The 1860s and 70s proved to be a boom period. Many bungalows came up and population increased. the fashionable area of Pali Hill came into being in the 1880s, later becoming the headquarters of film stars.

The Bandra-Kurla Complex in the east is among the biggest, most modern commercial complexes in the country!. Perhaps the culmination of all its modernity will be proposed trans harbour sea link project. When completed, the 25 kms Bandra-Worli sealink will take pressure off Mahim Causeway. Bandra today is one of the prestigious addresses. It is a place of glamour, entertainment, stardom and fashion avenues, and is rightly called the "Queen of the Suburbs".
